What is your current job and what does it entail?
I work as a marine technician attached to a research vessel at Oregon State University in Corvallis. I am in charge of pre-cruise logistical coordination, cruise loading, sensor calibration for the research vessel science equipment, custom sensor development and integration, and cruise specific sensor integration. During a cruise I provide on ship technical support for equipment from deck equipment to sensors to the shipboard network and satellite communication equipment.

What was the key factor in your career decision?
I wanted a job that required a broad variety of skills.

What do like most about your career?
I like that my day-to-day tasks vary broadly and that I get to travel a lot.

What do you like least about your career?
The travel sometimes.

What do you do to relax?
Read and watch movies. Work on cars.

McGuyver, Jettero Heller, Milla Jovovich, Jason Statham

What advice would you give a high school student who expressed an interest in pursuing a career in your field?
Learn everything you can about everything you can all the time. You’ll end up with an interesting job.

Are career opportunities in your field increasing or decreasing and why?
They’re staying about the same as far as I can tell. There’s always an opening or two.

What will you be doing 10 years from today?
Something different, but equally interesting.
